Review: Path | The Private Facebook Alternative

Launched in November 2010, Path has over 1 Million users. It is being touted as the “Private Facebook Alternative”. So today, I installed the Path app on my iPad. Being that it was built for iPhone, the resolution is small, as with all “built for iPhone first” apps, but I was still able to set it up, and get my social networks connected rather quickly.

At first glance, it reminded me of Facebook.

  • Cover Photo
  • Profile Timeline (including “Asleep” and “Awake”)
  • Photos
  • Location Check-Ins

But it seems Path succeeds in several key areas that Facebook is failing – Privacy, Speed, Double-Posting and Emotion.

Privacy

Because Path is limited to Mobile Application viewing, currently only those with iPhone or Android with the Path Application installed can view Path. And only those you accept as friends can view your Path. Your “Activity” shows you not only whats happening with your friends, but also who is viewing your page whether – they’re a friend or not. Granted, because they’re not a friend, they’re only able to view your cover photo, but at least you know who tried. Hell, maybe they saw your cover photo and didn’t want to send you a friend request, but at least you know! Ha!

The designers and engineers at Path have dreamed up and realized the Smart Journal–a journal that’s with you everywhere you go, posts entries without your effort, combines photo, video, music, people, places, and text, and most importantly, includes your loved ones. Path upholds the expectations for privacy of both the mobile phone and the journal with its limited, intimate, more personal network.

Speed

Path is fast. Much like Twitter, you’re able to share your thoughts, photos, and check-ins in record time. It can easily be argued that the amount of friends one has on Facebook can cause the Facebook Application to load slowly. But the number of Facebook users logged into Facebook via mobile and/or web must be accounted for. Path is currently smaller and private, so Path doesn’t have that issue.

Double-Posting

I created my Twitter account in 2007…about 5 months before I created my Facebook account. And the thing I hated the most was that I could not post from Facebook to Twitter. With most Social Applications, you can post from Twitter to Facebook, but posting from Facebook to Twitter required another 3rd Party Account somewhere that would sync at a specified interval. It was never instantaneous. Path gives you a “per post” option to share with Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Foursquare. With every post, you make the decision of which social network you’d like to share with. Imagine that.

Emoticons

Facebook is currently limited to “Like” and the ability to “Unlike” the things you “Like”. But Path gives you Happy, Wink, Sad, Surprised, and Love emoticons that you can select and unselect.

Having already been around one (1) year, I’m not sure how long Path will last, but it seems like a viable option for those who are interested in sharing their everyday lives with their family and friends, without being concerned about who else has the ability to view that activity.

Notables

  • Filtered Photos. Path ripped Instagram ‘a new one’ when they added photo filters. In fact, I think the people at Instagram are concerned. But as with most iPhone Camera Filter apps, if you want more filters, you’ll need to cough up the $.99 to do so.

Suggestions

  1. Limited Photo Albums. Sometimes one (1) photo isn’t enough, but no more than 3 – 5 should be sufficient. I think more than 5 photos would cut down on the speed that makes Path great.
  2. Shazam Listening.
  3. IntoNow Watching. Path already has selected “Listening”, but if they had “Watching”, that’d be cool. Further, if they had the Yahoo! IntoNow power of hearing what you’re watching on TV, that’s be even more awesome.

I’m sure I’ll have a few more suggestions, but Path just released an update, so who knows what they’ve got for me to explore today.

Cost? Oh Yeah. It’s Free

Yep. But it’s only been a year. They’ll need funds coming from somewhere, and those photo filter purchases are going to slow down eventually.

Anyways…

Welcome to the mobile era, welcome to Path.

How-To: Edit Facebook Timeline Favorite Apps

Remove App from Facebook Favorites
by Courtney Elizabeth · September 27, 2011 · Social Media ·

Facebook’s New Timeline gives you boxes for your “Favorite” Apps at the top of your profile.

What’s cool is that you can add, swap or remove apps!

I wasn’t too fond of the “Maps” app, so I was more than excited to remove it. The new “Maps” app is basically a map of everywhere you’ve posted from. Since I don’t travel as much anymore, most of my posts are from home/work. So there’s no need to have this huge DOT over Los Angeles. That’s just silly and pointless. Ha!

To Add, Swap or Remove a Favorite App:

[learn_more caption="Step #1" state="open"]Click on the up arrow that’s next to your Favorite’s section – to the far right. This will bring up a menu with options.

I like the freedom of deciding what my favorites are.
I’m sure you will too.

How-To: A Cleaner Facebook Ticker

How-To-Remove-Comments-and-Likes-Facebook-Ticker
by Courtney Elizabeth · September 25, 2011 · Social Media ·

Facebook’s Latest Update allows users to view the up-to-the-second activity of friends that they are subscribed to in a “Ticker”.

Some of the information is cool, but some things you probably don’t care too much about. I mean, who wants to be a stalker? That’s not sexy.

To remove a particular users “Comments and Likes” from your Facebook Ticker, here’s how:

[learn_more caption="Step #1" state="open"] Move your cursor over your friend’s name; a box will load.[/learn_more]

[learn_more caption="Step #2" state="close"] Move your cursor over the “Subscribed” tab.

[learn_more caption="Step #3" state="close"] Un-check the “Comments and Likes” link. How To Remove Comments and Likes Facebook Ticker 580x458 How To: A Cleaner Facebook Ticker[/learn_more]

Your Facebook Ticker will be a lot cleaner once you go through all of your friends.

However, if you’re like me, and you have way too many friends that you’ll need to do this with, you’ll probably just ignore the new Facebook Ticker all-together. *wink*

A Facebook Phone Would Be Similar to the Microsoft Kin Fail

facephone-facebook-phone
by Courtney Elizabeth · September 28, 2010 · Girl Geek ·

A Facebook phone doesn’t sound exciting OR promising to me.

What’s the big deal?

While it doesn’t sound like it would be great for those who also need their phone for business / work usage, it would definitely garner a lot of buzz from the younger generation. Blackberry has the business / enterprise market, while iPhone and Android cover the rest.

And while we’re on the topic, whatever happened to that Verizon phone that was very… Facebook / Internet centered?

OH YEAH… The Kin. OK. Who bought one? Show your face.

Facebook has been working with INQ for a couple of years because they share a common investor. But that doesn’t mean they’ll actually be releasing a fully branded Facebook phone with them.

This feels much like Facebook’s latest development… “Places”.

Foursquare already seems to have the location based / check-in market majority.

And Foursquare is MUCH better and offers discounts and perks on check-ins.

I hope they do a lot more market research before releasing a “Facebook” branded phone.

Hopefully, they won’t follow in the Microsoft Kin’s footsteps.

AT&T Facebook Page Fail

att-your-world-delivered-stillborn
by Courtney Elizabeth · September 8, 2010 · Girl Geek ·

Welp…

AT&T had to go and open its mouth this morning in attempt to simmer the masses of people angry with the AT&T Wireless service.

I’m sure they weren’t expecting everyone to sound off on their Facebook Page about how much they dislike the service. And YES, there’s always a few “supporters”, but those aren’t as funny so no one really cares about those comments anyway. lol.

This page makes me proud to have been a Verizon Wireless customer for the past 10 years.

I thought I’d highlight a few below…but before I get to that…

My favorite AT&T photo response:

att your world delivered stillborn AT&T Facebook Page Fail

To which someone commented: “…this should read, ‘Your world. Stillborn.’ “

#idied *falls backwards out of chair*

Alright…bring on the highlarity:

“I would have to say over the last few years the only reason I am with ATT is for the iPhone. In January when iPhone come out on the Verizon network you can bet I will be switching all five of my phones. The service from ATT has got to be the worst service. With my job I use Sprint, ATT, Verizon, and t- mobile. Out of t…hem all ATT has the worst service and right behind ATT is sprint. V(C)an not wait for the iPhone to get to Verizon.”

Coverage in Northern California is ATROCIOUS! Calling customer service to report this was met with hostility and rudeness. Berkeley is especially bad. A major metropolitan area should not have 1 bar service and endemic dropped calls even on the fringes of town. I am getting rid of AT&T the very second other carriers have the iPhone.

Instead of insulting self-congratulatory letters, how about investing some of those billions into free microcells for those who can’t make/receive calls in their own house? How about an apology letter? Since I’ve moved, I’m now basically paying ~$100/month for an ipod touch.

I just bought a new house last month.
I work from home and I’m excited because now I finally have a dedicated office space (something I’ve never had). The ONLY problem is that my phone doesn’t work, ever.
I’m SERIOUSLY thinking about jumping ship. Winter is coming and I can’t be going outside to make phone calls anymore.

Sorry AT&T, but you are a total joke. The *ONLY* reason you get a dime from me is because of the iPhone. If the iPhone was available tomorrow on another network, I would switch instantly. I don’t care about the early termination fee.

And how the heck did you strike such an exclusive deal with Apple? Well, gee, how about giving me service in my house… or maybe my office so when a client calls I can actually talk with them, rather than asking for their phone number and calling back on my landline…Yeah, nice going AT&T and thanks for charging an arm and a leg for data packages!

If you have any favorites, feel free to comment!

July Update

by Courtney Elizabeth · July 9, 2009 · Life ·

…because I really just skipped over June as if it wasn’t a month or something…

God has really been good to me…and I don’t really have any complaints for ya…

Sooo let’s see what’s been going on in this little world of mine…

  • I’ve officially moved to North Hollywood
  • I’m liking it so far…if I can just get over waking up to folks singing loudly by day…and watching folks practice dancing in their living rooms by night…
  • I went to the Lakers Championship Parade
  • and that’s a big step for someone who loved them for years, disliked them after Kobe did …whatever he DID…or…DIDNT do, and then picked them back up this year…
  • I’ve been working like a mad person…my grand is forever imminent…
  • I’ve seen more of Los Angeles, Hollywood, San Fernando Valley than I have in all of the 9 years that I’ve been living here
  • I’ve been expanding my social media networking like crazy
  • CourtneyEizabeth.com has made it to it’s 6th year as of June 5th
  • and gained over 80 new readers in the past few months…
  • And I havent even been saying anything! lol!!
  • I’ve been keeping the Mobile Me version alive at GirlDriven.com
  • I actually post more to GirlDriven.com than I do anywhere else…lol…
  • but you should still follow me on Twitter
  • I’ve purchased a new munny and a new mini mobile munny
  • …but i havent named them yet…
  • I’ve done 2 photo shoots
  • …one commercial short
  • …and I’ve managed to remain somewhat sane

I wonder what the next two months will have in store for me.

Alright God…I’m ready…let’s go!

…because I was soo excited!

When I got to the office this morning…
There was a box waiting for me with a Georgia address, and I just KNEW it had to be my box from Jazz..
She told me it was coming…
And I’ve been patiently waiting…and it’s here!

I’ve been asking for one of these for over two years. lol! And she remembered little ol’ me!

And it’s cute! ♥

I waited until I got home to open it because I wanted to be able to relax and unwind and…be…non-stressed.

Delayed.Gratification.Crucial.

I know…I know…

It’s been a while sounds soo…
Redundant.

Truth is…sometimes it’s easier to just write stuff on Facebook…
But I’m gonna try to be better about updating the blog too…

The Mobile version of Courtney Elizabeth is available at girldriven.com. If you’re on tumblr, you can follow me from this link directly.

I’ve been trying to keep up…and I think I keep up with the Mobile Version more, because I’m usually traveling or on the go more…lol.

Be that as it may…
Life has been good… and …
God has been good

I’ve been busy with traveling and overall business in general.
One thing I’ve been reminded of over the past month is that…you can’t slow down…you can’t give up…and anything you want, you can obtain. Prayer Works.

I’ll be in touch…
